Karigars and metal: how to know what each one holds of yours

Gold goes out to the karigar and comes back as jewelry, less what was lost. Weighing both ways, an agreed loss allowance and two accounts per karigar are what keep it honest.

G GoJewels Team 3 minute read

The short answer: weigh the metal out, weigh the work back, compare what was lost with the allowance you agreed, and keep two accounts per karigar โ€” the metal they hold and the making you owe.

Weigh both ways, in fine grams

50 g of 22K issued is 45.8 g of fine gold. What comes back is weighed and its fine content worked out the same way. The difference is the loss โ€” and it is only meaningful if both sides were measured the same way.

An allowance agreed in advance

Agree the loss you accept per kind of work before it starts. GoJewels compares the actual loss with the allowance on every job and flags anything over it, so the conversation about 0.1 g happens on the day, not at the end of the year.

Two accounts, settled separately

The metal account says what the karigar holds of yours; the money account says what making you owe. You can settle making in cash and metal by returning metal, or settle metal at an agreed rate โ€” but each settlement is recorded against its own account.

Confirm it with them

Print the statement and have the karigar sign it on a date. A balance both sides agreed is worth far more than one only you believe.

What is a loss allowance?

The share of the metal you agree a karigar may lose in making a piece โ€” filing dust, polishing โ€” before the difference is charged to them.

Why two accounts per karigar?

Because metal and money are different things. The karigar holds your metal in fine grams; you owe them making in money. Mixing the two hides a shortfall in one behind a balance in the other.
